Background : The uneven distribution of physicians and the aging and declining number of surgeons are increasing the burden on regional surgeons. To support regional healthcare, it is essential to allocate surgeons based on the specific needs of each community. This study aimed to clarify the roles and demand for general surgeons capable of addressing a wide range of medical needs in regional healthcare.
Methods : From June to August 2024, a survey was conducted targeting 81 outpatients and 34 surgeons in medical institutions across Oita Prefecture. The survey assessed the demand for and roles of general surgeons in regional healthcare.
Results : The demand for “locally needed physicians” was higher for general surgeons than specialists. General surgeons were expected to handle benign and emergency surgeries, as well as comprehensive perioperative management. However, more patients preferred specialists for treatment. Many patients in regional areas expressed a preference for benign disease surgeries to be conducted at local hospitals rather than urban centers.
Conclusion : Regional healthcare requires a dual approach : specialists for advanced surgeries and general surgeons for benign and emergency surgeries, as well as comprehensive perioperative care. Developing training systems and ensuring appropriate allocation of general surgeons are crucial for sustaining regional healthcare.
