Abstract
An investigation of the bending moments in the master connecting-rod of the 7-cylinder radial aircraft engine by a graphical method has been carried out by the writer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and a part of its results were already presented in the S.A.E. Journal June, 1933 by Prof. C.F. Taylor.
The writer has met an opportunity of acculate computation of these moments recently again, and herein are presented the results of them.
The bending stress in the master connecting-rod comes from turning moments about the crank-pin axis caused by the action of the articulated-rods due to gas pressure and inertia forces and also by the centrifugal force in the master connectingrod itself. Charts are presented that show the magnitude and fluctuation of these turning moments.
A simple formulas derived therefrom for approximating this moment in similar and 9-cylinder radial aircraft engines.
