Abstract
With the object of reducing the drag due to the oil cooler in a high speed aeroplane, a new type of oil cooler, using the leading edge of the engine cowling, was constructed, and tested. Its advantages are less weight, better adaptability, and simple construction than the ordinary honeycomb-type coolers.
The results are as follows:-
(i) The cooler, which consists of electrically spot-welded alluminium plates, resisted a pressure of 2kg/cmcm2, and passed the endurance flight test for over six months.
(ii) The speed up of the aeroplane, equipped with the new cooler, compared with the ordinary honeycomb-type coolers, is 11km/hr. The reduction in coefficient of drag of the aeroplane amounts to about 5%.
(iii) The new cooler, which weight 9.5kg, is about 46% lighter than the ordinary honeycomb-type cooler, which weight 17.7kg.
