Abstract
An off-the-job training course on ultrasound-guided central venipuncture was conducted for doctors in the initial clinical training period. Information regarding the procedure of ultrasound-guided central venipuncture and its advantages and limitations was mailed out prior to the beginning of the course. On the first day of the training, the trainers explained and demonstrated the venipuncture technique by using a simulator.
The doctors were taught the basic technique on a simple blood vessel simulator, and they received advanced practical training in internal jugular venipuncture, in particular, the avoidance of inadvertent arterial puncture, by using a real mannequin-type simulator. A questionnaire survey after the course revealed high satisfaction of the trainees. However, some trainees expressed a desire for further training in a similar clinical setting and an extended practice period.
For safe central venipuncture, off-the-job training in ultrasound-guided central venipuncture is essential for doctors in the initial clinical training period. To achieve the best effects of training, the course should be further improved.
