Abstract
The Japanese Society of Anesthesiologists published preoperative fasting guidelines in July 2012. The idea of preoperative fasting is considered widely out-of-date in patient management based on preoperative fasting guidelines. Avoiding unnecessary fasting, improving patient satisfaction, and preventing dehydration are considered necessary. This article provides information on the history of preoperative fasting guidelines and the current practice in Japan, how preoperative fasting guidelines published by the Japanese Society of Anesthesiologists were developed, details of the guidelines and controversial issues, as well as differences between guidelines in Japan and those of other countries. Future challenges with regard to these guidelines are also mentioned.
