Abstract

It has been about 10 years since the introduction of ultrasound guided peripheral nerve blocks in Japan. The importance of peripheral nerve blocks is understood by many anesthesiologists. The ultrasound machine has improved dramatically with the progress of image processing technology over the last decade. It makes it possible to track the peripheral nerve at more distal sites. Needle visualization technology helps anesthesiologists perform deeper site blocks. Advances in block needles and needle guides have also improved visualization of the block needle. The introduction of lipid rescue for local anesthetic toxicity should improve patients’ safety. Anesthesiologists need to keep up with progress in the machine and device.
