Abstract

Postoperative cognitive dysfunction has various causes, so precautions, using a variety of interventions are necessary. Based on the results of our cohort study of elderly patients who underwent non-cardiac surgery, the incidence of postoperative cognitive dysfunction at 3 months was 27%. Postoperative cognitive dysfunction was associated with age, symptomatic cerebrovascular disorder, serum creatinine level, use of statins, body-mass index, nutritional status, malignancy, and re-operation. Since the development of cognitive dysfunction is related to cognitive reserve, we instituted an approach called Effective Medical Creation(EMC), which involves stimulation of the five senses and thoughts/impressions, in our hospital. Here we introduce our EMC attempts using aroma therapy, digital window, decoration of the hospital room, and communication robot.
