Abstract
Chronological changes of reporting systems of thyroid cytology in Japan were described. In 2005, the Guidelines of the Papanicolaou Society for Cytopathology was adopted in the General Rules for Description of Thyroid Cancer, 6th ed., issued by the Japanese Society of Thyroid Surgery (JSTC). In this new system, interpretation categories were as follows ; Inadequate, Normal or benign, Indeterminate, Malignancy suspected, and Malignancy, Then, Indeteminate category was divided into 2 subclassifacatinos ; namely, “Atypia of undeterminated significance/follicular lesion of undetermined significance (AUS/FLUS)” and “Follicular neoplasm/suspicious for a follicular neoplasm (FN/SFN)” by the Bethesda System for thyroid cytology (2008). This revision has been world-widely spreading. JSTC decided to accept the Bethesda System and introduce to the next revision of the General Rules.
