Background : Chordoma is an uncommon malignant mesenchymal tumor that arises from in the spinal axis. We report a rare case of chordoma arising from the chest wall.
Case : A man in his 80’s was diagnosed as having a tumor in his chest wall, and the tumor was completely excised. The imprint cytology findings showed tumor cells arranged in clusters with abundant cytoplasm in a mucinous background. The nuclei were round, with granular chromatin and small nucleoli. Histopathological examination of the tumor revealed characteristic physaliphorous cells and epithelial-like cells in the lesion. Immunohistochemistry revealed diffuse positive staining of the nuclei of the tumor cells. On the basis of these findings, we made the diagnosis of chordoma of the chest wall.
Conclusion : We report a rare case of chordoma arising from the chest wall, and shown that the diagnosis can be confirmed by the cytological findings.
