Abstract
Comparative studies were made on the cytological findings and the histological degree of gland involvement of 12 cases with squamous carcinoma in situ and 6 microinvasive carcinoma of the uterine cervix.
The histological diagnosis was based on the step sections of conization.
The following results were obtained:
1) Cases with mild degree of gland involvement were 6 carcinoma in situ, moderate cases were 4 carcinoma in situ and a microinvasive carcinoma, and severe cases were 2 carcinoma in situ and 5 microinvasive carcinoma.
2) The main cells in the cases of mild degree of gland involvement were parabasal type malignant cells and in the cellular feature showed appearance of intermediate type malignant cells aside from parabasal type.
3) In general the malignant cell count increased with the progress of gland involvement.
4) The mean nuclear and cellular diameter in cases with moderate-severe degree of gland involvement increased more than in mild cases. The nuclear cytoplasmic ratio was larger in the mild than other cases, but there was no difference between carcinoma in situ with mild-severe degree of gland involvement and microinvasive carcinoma.
5) The cytological features in mild cases showed the appearance of so-called C. I. S. pattern, and in moderate-severe cases pleomorphic change was seen between malignant cells. In addition, a few clusters of parakeratotic cells were also seen.
6) On the cytological findings, no significant difference was observed between carcinoma in situ with higher degree of gland involvement and microinvasive carcinoma.
