A case rapid cytological and histological study was performed on a patient with pulmonary embolism.
The patient was a 25 year-old female who was a chondrosarcoma of the calf one year previously, and recently she presented with progressive dyspnea and chest pain.
She was diagnosed as large pulmonary emboli by pre-operative examination. The embolectomy of main pulmonary arteries was performed and the cytological and histological examination during the operation revealed the tumor emboli of chondrosarcoma.
Later, autopsy examination clarified the recurrent chondrosarcoma with extensive pulmonary arterial invasion and no distant metastasis.
This is a rare case of intravascular growing of chondrosarcoma, diagnosed by cytology and tissue frozen section during the operation.
