Abstract
The patient was a 48-year-old man and was admitted with chief complaints of jaundice and upper abdominal pain. As the result of several examinations, he was suspected to be carcinoma of pancreas head. Exfoliative cytology of the bile and brushing cytology of the bile duct were performed. Exfoliative cytology of the bile was performed in many times, but there was no carcinoma cell. In the first examination of brushing cytology of the bile duct, we found many adenocarcinoma cells, and the patient was diagnosed as carcinoma of pancreas head.
Thereafter, his general condition gradually deteriorated. He died and was autopsied. From the analysis of autopsy findings, it is considered that we can diagnosed as carcinoma by the method of brushing cytology of the bile duct, even if carcinoma cells are present under the mucosal epithelium of bile duct.
