Abstract
We report a case of cystadenoma of the pancreas diagnosed by intraoperative aspiration cytology. The patient was a 48-year-old woman who underwent surgery because of a cystic lesion of the pancreas found on ultrasonography during a medical examination.Intraoperative aspiration cytology practiced a diagnosis of benign or malignant tumor which could not have been made on the basis of clinical findings. We were thus able to diagnose cystadenoma of the pancreas.
The cytologic features included clusters which were in the form of sheets or were papillary with clear background. Nuclear atypia was minimal, and nuclei were round or oval and quite uniform in size and shape. The chromatin distribution was equal, finely granular and regular. The cytoplasm was lightly stained by Diff-Quik stain (The Cosmopolitan Reagent Corporation). The postoperative histologic diagnosis was cystadenoma of the pancreas. The above results indicate that intraoperative cytologic diagnosis is useful for this operation.
