Abstract
Background: Malignant epithelioid gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) is rare in the jejunum, and preoperative diagnosis is difficult. We report a rare case of malignant epithelioid GIST that originated in the jejunum which was effectively diagnosed by a combination of frozen histological section and cytological examination.
Case: A 68-year-old woman was admitted with a complaint of bloody stool. A large mass was observed around the jejunum by barium X-ray of small intestine and abdominal CT. Partial jejunum amputation was performed. The solid tumor was about 55×40×40mm in size. By histological examination of a frozen section, malignant epithelioid GIST was suspected, but we could not exclude round cell malignant tumor, especially malignant lymphoma, undifferentiated carcinoma, and malignant melanoma. Cytologically, exclusion of other malignant tumors was possible.
Conclusion: We could diagnose malignant epithelioid GIST of the jejunum by frozen histological examination with the aid of intra-operative cytology.
