Abstract
Background: Many cases have been reported on double cancer of the ovary and endometrium and most are pathologically diagnosed as endometrioid adenocarcinoma of both origins. We present a case of double cancer with different cytopathology, mucinous cystadenocarcinoma of ovary and endometrioid adenocarcinoma of endometrium, which was diagnosed by cytological findings.
Case: A 51-year-old woman diagnosed with ovarian malignancyvia echography, computed tomography (CT), and tumor markers was found in preoperative cytology of the endometrium to have endometrial cancer. A biopsy specimen of the endometrium confirmed the diagnosis of endometrioid adenocarcinoma. An imprint smear of the ovary taken during surgery showed mucinous cystadenocarcinoma. These findings indicate different cytological features. Emdometrioid and mucinous cystadenocarcinoma cells were observed in the endometrium and ovary. The diagnosis from the ovarian imprint and endometrial smears was confirmed pathologically using postoperative tissues of the ovary and endometrium.
Conclusion: It is noteworthy that a patient may have had different types of adenocarcinoma in the ovary and endometrium. Cytology contributed to a differential, proper diagnosis.
