Abstract

Dissected landslides are difficult to recognize topographically. We therefore developed a method to extract dissected landslides from 5-m resolution digital elevation models (DEMs) based on three criteria; ① the discontinuity of ridges was used to extract landslide slopes, and their, ② elevations and ③ slopes.

After verifying that these criteria accurately extract active landslide topographies of the Sanuki Range, northeast Shikoku, we confirmed the feasibility of our approach using the example of the Kirihata Hills, dissected large-scale landslide formed about 1 Ma (Hasegawa, 1992). Our results demonstrate that these three criteria are useful for identifying unrecognized dissected landslide bodies whose bedrock contains irregular open cracks, similar to the Kirihata Hills. These criteria thus represent a new index for extracting dissected landslide slopes.
