Abstract
Various physical properties have been investigated on water-saturated specimens of andesitic rocks, weathered to different degrees, in the western parts of Kumamoto city. Experiments have been made to obtain a difference of physical properties with the degree of weathering.
It was recognized that Poisson's ratio calculated from elastic wave velocities increases with progress of weathering. It takes a value within the range of 0.25-0.32 for fresh rocks, and about 0.4 for strongly weathered rocks.
There are close correlations between the physical properties of andesitic rocks, so that we have been established experimental formulas.
The degree of rock weathering have been usually estimated by one physical property, according to variability of it. For more accurate evaluation of weathering stage of rocks, in this paper, we used three factors which are uniaxial compressive strength, velocity of dilatational wave and apparent density.
