Abstract
Investigation about railway tunnels in cold districts was made to analyze the actual condition of tunnel deformation by ground freezing.
As we have expected these tunnels are deforming showing seasonal alteration clearly, deformation is advanced in winter and relived in summer. Shape of deformation shows that lateral earth pressure is much more than vertical earth pressure. Deformed tunnels are located in the specific geological areas in which Pliocene or Pleistocene sedimentary rocks are mainly distributed, but no one is located in hard rocks area. It is observed that frost heaving occurs behind the lining of these deformed tunnels.
