Abstract
Due to the widespread use of the Internet, the opportunities for children to use Internet services have increased greatly. Hence, there is an urgent need to raise their awareness to use strong safe passwords on the Internet when they are in elementary schools. For our trial, we conducted a classroom exercise with 34 fifth-grade students in an elementary school using hands-on teaching materials developed by Scratch. The results of the trial showed that it deepened their knowledge of the use of strong passwords and generated their interest in passwords. Furthermore, the results indicated that the students might be motivated to teach others what they have learned and understood about the use of strong passwords. Based on our results, we propose that it is essential to consider the use of hands-on teaching materials to help elementary school students understand the basics and importance of using strong passwords on the Internet, and to practice what they have learned about information security.
