Abstract
Hypoparathyroidism is one of the major complications after total thyroidectomy and the patients need calcium and/or vitamin D medication. Although it is well known that hypercalcemia causes renal dysfunction, we experienced a case of renal dysfunction caused by overmedication in spite of normal concentration of serum calcium. So, we investigated the relation between serum calcium and creatinine in 43 patients with supplementation of calcium and/or vitamin D after total thyroidectomy. Serum creatinine increased 19 times in 10 patients. Concentration of serum calcium was normal 10 times, while hypercalcemia was observed simultaneously 9 times. Serum creatinine was decreased by reduction of calcium and vitamin D 4 times in patients with normal concentration of serum calcium. This result suggested that there are cases who had renal dysfunction due to the overmedication of calcium and/or vitamin D in patients with normal concentration of serum calcium.
