Abstract
We performed chemoradiation with intraarterial injection via the superficial temporal artery for squamous cell carcinoma of the maxillary gingiva/hard palate and mandibular gingiva for organ preservation. To evaluate the efficacy of our therapy, we retrospectively analyzed 21 patients in our institute between 1998 and 2008. We reviewed the cause-specific survival rate and preservation rate to assess the efficacy of our therapy. The 3-year survival rate was 27% for maxillary gingiva/hard palate tumors and 60% for mandibular gingival tumors. The preservation rate was 9% for maxillary gingiva/hard palate tumors and 30% for mandibular gingiva tumors. Thus, we should consider changing our therapy to improve the survival rate for maxillary gingiva/hard palate and mandibular gingiva tumors.
