Abstract
We report a case of a carotid body tumor resected with extremely low blood loss and short operation time using preoperative embolization. The patient was a 42-year-old woman with cervical swelling from 5 years earlier. A diagnosis of carotid body tumor was made from MRI imaging and carotid angiography, and surgical resection was performed after preoperative embolization. Surgical resection for carotid body tumor entails an inherent risk of excessive blood loss and cranial nerve injury, and so a careful decision on the therapeutic strategy and sufficient informed consent are imperative. It is necessary to make a certain diagnosis preoperatively of carotid body tumor by MRI imaging and carotid angiography. Moreover, preoperative embolization is useful for reducing blood loss and shortening operation time.
