Abstract
Pyriform sinus fistula (PSF) is a rare congenital abnormality that causes acute suppurative thyroiditis. Complete removal of the fistula with thyroid tissue has previously been used. Recently, endoscopic electrocauterization has been reported as a less-invasive treatment for PSF. The present study retrospectively reviewed fourteen patients with PSF treated at our institution. The post-operative course was uneventful in all cases, with no cases of recurrent laryngeal nerve paralysis. The success rate of the initial electrocauterization was 93% (13/14 cases). Endoscopic electrocauterization appears to be a less-invasive, safe, and effective method for the treatment of PSF.
