Abstract
We reviewed 144 cases of parotid gland tumors treated in our hospital during the past 20 years. The subjects consisted of 130 cases of benign tumors and 14 cases of malignant tumors. There were more cases of Warthin's tumor than those of pleomorphic adenoma or malignant tumor in males, and more cases of pleomorphic adenoma than those of Warthin's tumor or malignant tumor in females (p < 0.001). The average age of patients with Warthin's tumor was higher than that of the patients with pleomorphic adenoma (p < 0.001). There were more cases of poor mobility and hardness in malignant tumors than in benign tumors (p < 0.05). CT, MRI, ultrasound echography and fine needle aspiration cytology gave an accurate diagnosis in over 80% of the cases. Facial nerve palsy occurred after operation in 17%, salivary fistula in 4% and Frey syndrome in 1%. There were more complications after operation for a malignant tumor than a benign tumor (p < 0.05).
