Abstract

The outcome of surgery for Graves' disease was studied in 88 patients in the 15 year period 1984-1998. There were 67 women and 21 men. The patients undergone subtotal thyroidectomy followed over the 6 month, except total thyroidectomy, were 76. Fifty patients (65.7%) were euthyroid, 6 (7.9%) were euthyroid with elevated TSH, 9 (11.8%) were recurrent hyperthyroidism and 11 (14.5%) had hypothyroidism. There was no relationship between remnant thyroid weights and postoperative thyroid function. After operation there were three cases (3.4%) of transient recurrent nerve palsy and one case of hypof unction of parathyroid glands.
