Effect of Quick Drying Rubbing Type Disinfectant Solutions against Opportunistic Pathogens

Abstract

　Antiseptic effect of quick drying rubbing type disinfectant solutions, povidone-iodine alcoholic solution (PVP-I), two kinds of benzalkonium chloride alcoholic solutions (BAC and BAC50) was examined on the palms of 4 nurses after treating the patients by the palm-stamp method. The patients were infected with MRSA or opportunistic pathogens in the ICU of Kagawa Medical University Hospital. After disinfection by PVP-I alcoholic solution, the number of surviving bacteria on the palm, especially staphylococci or MRSA, was extremely reduced in comparison with those after treatment with BAC or BAC50 alcoholic solution. These findings indicate that PVP-I alcohlic solution has more antiseptic effect on opportunistic pathogens on palms of nurses after treating patients in ICU infected with the pathogens than both of benzalkoni um chloride alcoholic solutions.
