Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the educational needs of nursing faculty in Japan, and to explore the related factors of it. A conceptual framework was constructed based on literature review. The Educational Needs Assessment Tool for Nursing Faculty (FENAT) and Faculty Attribute Questionnaire (FAQ) were used as instruments. The instrument packets were distributed to 1577 nursing faculty randomly sampled from baccalaureate programs, associate degree programs, and diploma programs in nursing in Japan. The answer were returned by mail. Eight hundred and thirty one (52.9%) nursing faculty responded, and 546 valid data were analyzed statistically. The results of the study showed that nursing faculty need to improve their professional activities. Furthermore, it was identified that 17 attributes of nursing faculty related with their educational needs. After discussion about the internal relation among the 17 attributes, seven hypothesis of educational needs of nursing faculty, which should be tested empirically in future study, were developed.
