Abstract
In Japan, the number of patients with oral candidiasis is expected to increase with an aging society. We investigated clinical statistics of patients with oral candidiasis who visited the Division of Oral Medicine, Tokyo Dental College, Ichikawa General Hospital between April 2019 and March 2020. The mean age of the patients was 71.1 years, women accounted for 69.6% of the total. Many cases displayed local risk factors, such as dry mouth and denture using. The diagnostic classification was erythema type in 47.7%, followed by pseudomembranous type in 42.3%. Candida albicans was the causative organism in 88.3% of cases. Regarding the efficacy of treatment, 23.8% of patients did not respond to antifungal drugs, and 17.8% of patients showed recurrence. Oral candidiasis generally has a good prognosis; however, some cases were intractable. More multi-institutional surveys are needed to understand detailed characteristics.
