Abstract
We have compared the machinability of spheroidal graphite cast iron with that of cylinder cast iron, ordinary cast iron, and cast steel by measuring the durability of cutting tools, the cutting force, and the type of chips. The durability of cutting tools has been measured by applying the facing method, and the cutting force with S. E. M. lathe tool dynamometer.
We have obtained the following conclusions.
(1) The durability of tools in case of cutting spheroidal graphite cast iron is much larger than that of ordinary cast iron and cylinder cast iron, but smaller than that of cast steel.
(2) The cutting force in case of cutting spheroidal graphite cast iron is slightly larger than that of cylinder cast iron.
(3) The chip type in case of cutting spheroidal graphite cast iron is much better than that of cylinder cast iron.
