Abstract

Chip control by means of chip former instead of chip breaker is also a highly effective practice in automatics and transfer machines as well as ordinary lathes. In this report basic informations for designing of chip formers have been presented through both experimentations and theoretical formula developed. The basic concept is to minimize the amount of spring-back, which is a function of yield stress and Young's modulus of the material cut, and chip thickness, and to prevent the overpass of chips across the cutting edge. The finalized type of chip former is one having a land of suited width, a circular chip former of proper radius and a releasing space in sequence from the cutting edge.
