Abstract
This paper shows the accuracy and the practicability of the measuring method of the work diameter by utilizing the friction roller. And the dimensional control of the work diameter is made practical by utilizing this trial device. The measurement by the friction roller is based on the kinematic mechanism caused by the rolling contacts, so the measuring error is due to its slip. Therefore, the approximate equation to find out the relation between the slip and its cause is derived from the dynamic mechanism of the rolling contacts. From these analyses and the results of the experiments, it is proved that the measuring error caused by the friction roller depends mostly on the revolving torque of its bearing. For this reason, the device with the air bearing has been designed to decrease the revolving torque to minimum. The measuring error ratio can be expected approximately up to 10-5 in this device. This value is less than several μm in the measurement of 100 mm in the work diameter. At the end of this study, the dimensional control is to process comparatively long works in the fixed diameter in the lathe. The work diameter is measured by the trial device mentioned before. According to the results of the experiments, it is observed that the dimensional control produces high efficiency in the work cylindricity. For example, the work cylindricity in the normal cutting is 65 μm. However, even in the same condition it decreases to be less than 10 μm when dimensional control is applied in cutting.
