Abstract
Knowledge on the mechanism of burr formation in metal cutting helps the prevention of burr formation or the diminution of the size of burr on machined parts. In this paper, types of burr induced by various cutting operations are classified in relation to the cutting edge and the cutting direction. Then, as the start of this series of study, the sideward burr induced in orthogonal cutting is investigated. It is concluded that the size of this burr is determined by the depth of cut and the shear strain undergone by the chip. Higher rake angle, higher cutting speed, cold working of workmaterial and cutting fluid decrease the shear strain and, as the result, the size of burr.
