In grinding, the condition of wheel surface brings severe effects on grinding characteristics. Especially, the position and size of the wear flat of cutting edge are critical. Conventional methods are not necessarily sufficient for in-process measurement of them. This paper describes a binary image-acquisition system for the wear flat. A sensing head uses the reflection of rays, and it is mounted on a pulse stage for the scan of wheel axial direction. These parts are controlled by a personal computer. In this report, images were acquired under dry condition to avoid the disturbance by coolant. From experiments, it is concluded that the binary images obtained by this system are in good agreement with the wear flats observed by optical microphotographs. Accordingly, obtained image can be regarded as the wear flat of cutting edge.
