Abstract

This study aims at developing an efficient collision check and avoidance method to generate the collision-free tool location data for 5-axis controlled machining. The collision check between the tool and workpiece is carried out through the detection processing of whether there are workpiece surface points located inside the tool shape. It is described in the paper that the collision check time is greatly decreased by using of a projection of both workpiece surface and tool shape to a specified plane to get the decreased collision detection area. Furthermore, the collision avoidance vector is calculated, and the calculation for determing the avoidance angle is newly introduced, which is effective to get the collision-free tool location data rapidly. It is found that the proposed processing method is efficient to shorten the calculation time to get the tool location data through computer simulations dealing with various workpiece shapes.
