Abstract
We examined a nutritional pathway for the 10 patients underwent allogeneous stem cell transplantation (SCT) from January 2003 to June 2005 in our hospital. Patients' characteristics were 2 males and 8 females, average of age was 38 years old, and those were having leukemia (7 cases), myelodysplastic disease (1 case) and non-Hodgkin lymphoma (2 cases). Analyzing their clinical course, neutropenia occurred from day -5 to 20, and stomatitis and gastrointestinal symptoms developed on day 4 to 7 and 0 to 11, respectively. Febrile episodes were obsereved from day 4 to 18. According to these clinical courses, 3 significant phenomena concerning to nutritional status were abstracted; (1) body weight changes until day 14, (2) increasing required energy due to febrile events day 4 to 18 and (3) recovery of oral intake after 2 weeks. In consequence, applied these observations, we intervened to patients during SCT on day 3, 20 and 30, at each period when specific treatment-related symptoms occurred correspond to the individual disease status. Nutritional intervention was intended to maintain the patients' oral intake during SCT and patients were supplied an enlightening suggestion about an importance of eating behavior from dietician and provided with a diet made to order.
