Abstract
Background/Aims: Controversy remains regarding fat emulsion administration after hepatic resection with liver cirrhosis. We studied the feasibility of continuous infusion of the fat emulsion with amino acids and glucose solution on lipid metabolism early after hepatic resection.
Materials and Methods: Twenty three patients received fat-containing total parenteral nutrition (TPN) were divided into the two groups, patients with mild liver disorder defined with under 15% of ICG test and patients with moderate liver disorder with over 15%. Postoperative changes in blood biochemical tests including lipids and fatty acids were compared between the two groups.
Results and Discussion: No difference in postoperative complication was observed. Blood glucose level increased but total cholesterol and phospholipids levels decreased under the normal range after the operation. Blood triglyceride, free fatty acids fractions, and phospholipid levels did not indicate discrepancy between the two groups indicating that continuous infusion of the lipid emulsion was metabolized sufficiently.
Conclusion: No disadvantage was observed with continuous infusion of lipid emulsion early after hepatectomy.
