Abstract
To obtain the sintered stainless steel having good mechanical properties and corrosion resistance, pressing and sintering properties of 18-8 type stainless steel powders were examined. Results are summerized as follows :
1) Compressibility of powder is improved by the addition of Ni up to 12%.
2) Relation between the porosity (ε) of the compact and the compacting pressure (P) is given by
ε0-ε=KlogP0/P.
3) By pressing at 6t/cm2, presintering at 1050°C for 15 min and repressing at 6t/cm2, the compact of 18Cr-12Ni powder shows the density of 7.1g/cm3, and 7.2-7.3 g/cm3 by resintering at 1250°C for 1hr.
4) Sintered stainless steels having the density of 6.9-7.2g/cm3 show the tensile strength of 35-42Kg/mm2, elongation of 25-35% and hardness (RB) of 35-55.
5) The corrosion resistance of sintered steels is closely related to the porosity, and improved with decreasing open porosity.
