Abstract

Morning sickness occurs in 50-80% of pregnant women in the early stages of pregnancy, and the main symptoms are gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite. It often resolves spontaneously by the 12th to 16th week of pregnancy, but when the symptoms worsen and dehydration, nutritional disorders, and metabolic disorders appear, it becomes a medical condition that requires treatment called hyperemesis gravidarum.

We experienced sepsis caused by Klebsiella oxytoca due to bacterial translocation during hospitalization for hyperemesis gravidarum. Bacterial translocation is a condition in which indigenous bacteria in the intestinal tract pass through the mucosal barrier and migrate into the body. It is said that it is more likely to occur in patients with underlying diseases such as malnutrition due to long-term tube feeding, intestinal obstruction, decreased immunity, and intestinal mucosal atrophy. Although there are few cases of sepsis in the early stages of pregnancy, we report that in this case, both mother and fetus could be saved by early diagnosis and early intervention of sepsis.
