Abstract
We report a case of right paraduodenal hernia in a 16-day-old neonate. She was referred to our hospital suffering from bile-stained vomiting and abdominal distension. Ultrasonographic examination of the abdomen showed a conglomerated intestinal loop and a large amount of ascites. Small bowel obstruction caused by malrotation with midgut volvulus was suspected and an emergent; laparotomy was done. At operation, right paraduodenal hernia was diagnosed as the cause of the obstruction, and resection of the hernia sac and closure of the hernia opening near the ileocecal valve was done after reduction of the strangulated intestine. Although the postoperative course was uneventful, a barium study showed incomplete rotation of the duodeno-jejunal loop of the bowel. Including our own case. 32 cases of right paraduodenal hernia listed by reviewing the Japanese Iiterature. In this report, we discuss a rare presentation in the neonatal period and the appropriate operative management of the disease based on these cases.
