Abstract
The patient was a 75 year-old man who complained of discomfort of the throat and pain on swallowing. CT scanning showed an air space on the right side of the trachea. He wa admitted on the suspicion of peritracheal abscess. Although antibiotic agents were given for several days, his symptoms did not improve. Bronchoscopy revealed a small hole on the right side of the membranous part of the trachea. We considered it to be a perforation of the peritracheal abscess and an operation was Performed with a cervical approach. Although no abscess was seen, a 2×1×1cm elastic hard mass was seen to protrude from the trachea. It was resected from the trachea. Macroscopically, most of the mass was solid and small cystic parts were seen near its root. Microscopically, the solid part was connective tissue, and the cystic parts were lined with ciliary epithelium. We diagnosed it as tracheal diverticulum because its lumen continued from that of the trachea.(JJSB.2002;24 : 23-25)
