Abstract
Parks and outdoor recreation sites in Japan are experiencing a demand to provide access from the rising population of older, disabled people. The purpose of research is to discuss how to improve accessible features on parks and outdoor recreation sites for all users. We examined documentations related to providing access for people with disabilities by surveying Japanese and United States parks and recreation regulations and guideline. The results can be summarized as follows: 1) Most of U. S. provided pragmatic access to program. 2) On the other hand, Japanese were strongly biased to facilities related (especially restrooms and movement in the park), quite a few guidance on the access barriers and activity-choices. This tendency considered to be results from the lack of user-based monitoring scheme for accessible outdoor recreation settings in Japan. Future research emphasis should be placed on assessing that continual improvement by public involvement.
