Early growth and adaptation of 16 species of tree seedlings on the immature soil improved by soil amendments in developed land

Abstract
Adaptation of 16 tree species to the planting ground using immature soil in developed land was studied. The seedlings of Pinus densiflora, Myrica rubra, Quercus serrata, Quercus acutissima, Quercus phillyraeoides, Quercus glauca, Castanopsis cuspidata, Zelkova serrata, Celtis sinensis var. japonica, Cinnamomum camphora, Machilus thunbergii, Neolitsea sericea, Cerasus jamasakura, Eurya japonica, Albizia julibrissin and Ligustrum japonicum were planted on the immature soil derived from B layer and C layer in the developed land. Bark compost and fertilizers were applied to the planting hole. The seedlings were grown for 2.5 years. The survival rate and D2H relative growth rate (D2H-RGR) were used as evaluation indices. P. densiflora, Q. acutissima, Q. phillyraeoides, Q. serrata and A. julibrissin all showed the survival rates and D2H-RGRs of greater than 80% and 1.0, respectively. M. rubra, Q. glauca and C. cuspidate showed the D2H-RGRs of greater than 1.0, but the survival rates of these species were between 57 and 73%. Z. serrata, C. sinensis var. japonica, C. camphora and L. japonicum showed the survival rates of greater than 80%, but their D2H-RGRs were lower than 0.9. The survival rate and growth rate of C. jamasakura, E. japonica, N. sericea, M. thunbergii were lower than other species. All tested seedlings of N. sericea had withered and died during the test period. The experimental results showed that the smaller seedlings had greater growth rates than the taller ones in many species, in particular in M. rubra, Q. acutissima, Q. phillyraeoides. And also our analytical results showed that the deep-rooted type trees grew better than the shallow-rooted type trees on the immature soil.
