In 1971 the last Oriental white stork (Ciconia boyciana) which survived in the wild of Toyooka, Japan was placed in captivity. Presently the captive population of the stork has increased to over 100 birds in fourteen zoos and one stork center. A reintroduction plan for the species was initiated in 1992 and a new facility for captive breeding and reintroduction, including an enducational center, will soon be constructed. However, many problems still remain which could adversely affect the reintroduction plan such as power lines which may injure flying birds and use of pesticides in rice fields where storks feed. Veterinarians may have to become involved not only in the medical aspects of reintroduction of the Oriental white stork but also in environmental conservation efforts, in order to make this first organized wildlife reintroduction project in Japan successful.
