Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of Mental Training Program for junior high school students in two soccer clubs. The subjects were 25 junior high school students in two soccer clubs (mean age=13.72, SD=0.47). From October 6 to November 24, 2002, they were asked to answer a questionnaire which was composed of the face sheet and the third version of Diagnostic Inventory of Psychological-Competitive Ability for Athletes : DIPCA. 3 (Tokunaga et al., 2000) for three times. The subjects were divided into Training group (n=12 male, mean age=13.67, SD=0.49) and Control group (n=13 male, mean age=13.77, SD=0.44). The subjects who were in Training group were participated in the Mental Training Program for seven weeks but the subjects who were in the Control group were not participated in that program. The data was analyzed using a 2 (groups) × 3 (times) two way repeated measures ANOVA. The results indicated significant interactions or main effects for times of “Strategic ability,” “Judgment ability” and “Cooperation.” This study showed that the Mental Training Program improved students' psychological conditions in sport competitive situations and interpersonal relationships in the junior high school soccer club effectively. In future research, the Mental Training Program that promotes students' adaptation to their school life will need to be developed.
