Abstract
At a Japanese university, zero-beginner Japanese language learners struggle to learn Hiragana and Katakana effectively. International students who study in Japan often have short interval between arrival and the start of the first semester. In order to succeed in their daily life and in their studies, they need to have effective self-study learning materials for acquiring Hiragana and Katakana before arrival in Japan. This study introduces a new online system based off of the "Association Method" that can be accessed on both computers and smartphones. Results of the study indicate that learners remained highly motivated and acquired Hiragana and Katakana efficiently.
