Abstract
In Japanese traditional performing arts, noh and kabuki are well known by Japanese language learners, but awareness of kyogen is low among them. Therefore, the Japanese Culture Promotion Program of Showa Women's University endeavors to show them the charm of kyogen. This year, in order to enjoy the words of kyogen, we created a booklet containing the outline of the kyogen play "Busu" in Japanese and English, and part of the script of "Busu". Using this booklet, we conducted a survey among Japanese language learners who come from non-Chinese character areas, which suggested that the existence of an English translation facilitates understanding. On the other hand, there were students who said they would not like to read the story outline before watching the kyogen play, as well as some students who did not understand the play because they did not know the meaning of keywords (e.g. busu). In addition to the English translation, it is necessary to find a way to encourage the students' expectations.
