Abstract
This study investigated the effect of using Content-Based Instruction (CBI) in an advanced Japanese language course on students’ learning performance. The results indicated that the students were highly motivated to learn science-related content in Japanese. The findings also showed that using CBI in Japanese language education not only improved students’ Japanese language ability, but also enhanced students’ academic skills in collecting research materials, writing research papers, and making academic presentations. In addition, providing students with relevant background information was found to be an effective way to promote their understanding of the learning content.
