Abstract
This study demonstrates that utterance function-aware speech has commonalities that transcend the inherent prosodic features of regional dialects. Three prosodic components (duration, fo, and intensity) were analyzed using 10 types of utterance function-aware speech recordings in the Osaka dialect and common Japanese. The results indicated that there were many shared prosodic components for utterance functions that clearly convey a speaker’s emotion (Apology, Sympathy, Gratitude, Praise) or pose a potential burden for the listener (Request, Asking permission). The eventual goal is to aid the conversation instruction of teachers who are native Osaka dialect speakers.
