Abstract
In recent years, the rapid advancement of generative AI and similar technologies has significantly transformed the environment for Japanese language learners. To investigate the actual usage of learning tools, we conducted a questionnaire survey, interviews, and in-class discussions targeting Japanese language school students. We found that ChatGPT and Google Translate are the two most commonly used tools, that learning tools are primarily used as dictionaries, and that many users are aware of ChatGPT's shortcomings but still use it. Moving forward, it is essential for teachers to acknowledge this reality and implement strategies such as creating opportunities for learners to share learning methods and tools with each other. Additionally, teachers themselves must continuously update their knowledge of learning tools, including generative AI.
