Abstract
A Large-Eddy simulation of the full cycle of a spark-ignition engine with port fuel injection has been computed in this work. The investigated engine is a modified Rotax-engine one cylinder 4-valves built and measured by the Institute of Reciprocating Engines of the University of Karlsruhe (IFKM). A subgrid-scale model for the LES recently proposed by Stolz called High-pass filtered Eddy-Viscosity model has been used which appears ideally suited for the calculation in moving meshes. The progress variable combustion model of Schmid et al. has been modified for LES, calibrated and used successfully in this computation. It has been found that the prediction of the combustion process close to the wall could be modeled more accurately by the combination of the Schmid et al. model and the ITNFS model of Meneveau and Poinsot. For the ignition of the combustion process we have developed a simple phenomenological model which suppresses successfully the appearance of detonations. The predicted cylinder pressure over crank angle agrees favorable well with the measured one.
